Lawmakers in the United States Congress have introduced a legislation seeking to prohibit Trump administration from revoking the work authorisation of spouses of H-1B visa holders in the country, PTI has reported.

The legislation was introduced by two lawmakers Anna G Eshoo and Zoe Lofgren saying that elimination of the benefit would force many foreign workers to utilise their talents to compete against American businesses.

“Eliminating this benefit would create a painful choice for many immigrants to either split up their families or return to their home countries and use their talents to compete against American businesses,” the US lawmaker Anna Eshoo remarked.

H-1B visa is a non-immigrant visa allowing US companies to employ foreign workers in speciality occupations. Many Indians are working in US companies using H-1B visas. H-4 visas are issued only to very close or immediate family members of H-1B visa holders. Many of those working under H-4 visa employment authorisation are spouses of Indian H-1B visa holders.

After introducing the H-4 Employment Protection act in the US Congress, said that more than 100,000 workers, mostly women, have benefitted from this rule since its implementation and have received employment authorisation.
