Supply Of Fruits And Vegetables In Delhi Impacted Due To The Ongoing Farmer Protests; Prices May Go Up

Supply of vegetables and fruits in Delhi has been impacted due to the ongoing farmer protests that have caused congested traffic jams, Times of India reports. As of now there is no shortage for these products but their prices are expected to shoot up considering that the current situation sustains.

Usually, around 5,500 tonnes of fruits and 6,500 tonnes of vegetables are delivered on a daily basis to the national capital’s largest wholesale fruit and vegetable market-Azadpur Mandi. However, these supplies have dropped to approximately 2,800 tonnes and 5,600 tonnes for fruits and vegetables since Friday.

Adil Ahmad Khan is the Chairman of the APMC mandi in Azadpur. speaking to TOI, Khan mentioned that both the arrivals and departures of trucks in the mandi have been hampered due to the sealing of borders owing to the protests. The city isn’t expected to face any scarcity of fruits or vegetables in the coming two days despite almost 50% decline in supplies.

Trucks carrying fruits and vegetables from Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Haryana and Rajasthan are stuck near Singhu border on NH-1.

“Though there hasn’t been much problem on the Delhi-UP border till now and truck movement has been smooth, hurdles are starting to arise. The demands of the farmers are valid and the central government should talk to them and find a solution,” Khan said. He cautioned that a paucity of products would be visible if the protests and the resulting traffic jams tend to continue.
