After hearing the two sides supporting and opposing the construction of the Mumbai Metro's car shed project in the Aarey Milk Colony, the Supreme Court on Monday (21 October) decided to not stop the work, putting a stay only on the further cutting of trees, reports India Today.
On the top court's decision, Solicitor General of India, Tushar Mehta who was representing the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) assured the court of maintaining an absolute status quo regarding the cutting of trees.
The decision from the two-judge bench comprising of Justices Arun Mishra and Deepak Gupta came after examining a status report with pictures on the plantation, transplantation, and felling of trees. The bench has now fixed the next hearing on the matter on 15 November.
The matter of development of a car shed for metro trainsets in the Aarey Milk Colony had attracted opposition from some, demanding that to avoid the cutting of trees, the car shed be shifted.
