Food delivery start-up Swiggy is furthering gender equality in its workforce by adding 2,000 women as its delivery personnel by March 2019.
"About 2,000 women will join our delivery team by March next year. Over the last few months, we have been working on training women for opportunities in this growing food delivery sector," the New Delhi-based online food delivery platform expressed in a statement on Tuesday, as reported by India Today.
Of the one lakh food delivery personnel engaged by Swiggy to deliver food daily across 45 cities, it employs only 60 women in 10 cities, including Ahmedabad, Kochi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Nagpur and Pune.
Swiggy is aiming to increase the number of woman delivery personnel and address the gender gap in labour force, prominent not only in India but all across the world.
To guard them against danger, the company is identifying 'safe zones' for women delivery personnel to operate in where they will be allowed to complete their deliveries by 6 pm. Apart from this, there is a dedicated helpline and more appointments of women in managerial posts.

Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
