The toll of swine flu deaths has steadily increased over the past few days and claimed 51 lives in the state in January, reports The New Indian Express.

Swine flu is an infection caused by one out of the several swine influenza viruses (SIV), with the most common strain across the country being H1N1. The H1N1 virus is contracted when an individual has touched an infected person or breathes in droplets of sneezes and coughs that are in the air.

The symptoms for swine flu are the same as viral fever and include a sore throat, body ache and cough.
