The data released by Election Commission at 10 am signals a close fight between the incumbent AIADMK and DMK. It shows that MK Stalin-led DMK is leading in 33 seats, while the AIADMK is up in 30 seats. The BJP, according to EC, leads in two seats, while PMK is up in four.
The counting of votes for the 234-member Legislative Assembly in Tamil Nadu began at 8 am on Sunday amidst strict Covid protocols in 75 centres across the state. A party would require at least 118 seats to win the election. The E Palaniswami-led AIADMK, who has allied with BJP, seeks to retain power for the third time in a row but faces a stiff challenge from M K Stalin-led DMK.

Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
