Rahul Gandhi’s whirlwind tour of Chennai to meet ailing Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa has ruffled many feathers. His own party feels humiliated, ally DMK feels ignored and BJP seems to be shocked.
Congress general secretary, in charge of Tamil Nadu, Mukul Wasnik did not know anything about the visit, nor did senior leader P Chidambaram.
The Congress vice-president, who spent more than 30 minutes talking to doctors about Jayalalithaa's condition, said that he wanted to "give maximum energy to Jayalalithaa ji so that she gets well soon''.
"We fail to understand why would he bypass the entire party. We are at a loss to understand what his plan is," said a senior Congress leader.
It looks like Gandhi undertook this trip to send a message out to the political theatre in Tamil Nadu, and the BJP in particular.
AIADMK, which thanked Gandhi for his gesture, is a little nervous and suspicious of BJP-led central government’s intentions.ٙ

Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
