The Election Commission of India has announced that the bypoll to fill the vacant assembly constituency of Erode East will be held on 27 February. The counting of votes will be done on 2 March.
The filing of nominations would start on 31 January and end on 7 February.
The bypoll was necessitated due to the death of the Congress MLA, Thirumahan Everaa. Everaa, who is the son of former Union minister and senior Congress leader EVKS Elangovan had died of cardiac arrest.
In the last elections, Yuvaraja M of the Tamil Maanila Congress (TMC) had come second by contesting on the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam's (AIADMK) two-leaves symbol.
The bypoll is being keenly watched as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) might decide to go it alone.
Seen from a region point of view, the seat falls under the Kongu region of western Tamil Nadu, which is a known stronghold of the AIADMK.

Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
