The Central government has informed Madras High Court on Thursday (6 December) that the planned All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Tamil Nadu would developed in 45 months after the approval by the Union Cabinet, reports Indian Express.
Union Health Ministry submitted this in response to a Public interest litigation (PIL) filed by K K Ramesh which requested to expedite the process for setting up of the premier medical institute. The project was announced in Union Budget 2015-16.
Tamil Nadu government had delayed the process of looking for a location for AIIMS. In June this year, five sites were proposed by the state government, and the centre has chosen Thoppur to set up the campus.
In reply to the petition, the health ministry had informed that establishment of AIIMS in Madurai district was under consideration. The Union Finance Committee is yet to approve it, and it has to be followed by the Union Cabinet, then it will be up and running in 45 months.
