A boiler exploded at the NLC India Ltd's thermal plant in Tamil Nadu's Cuddalore, killing at least six workers and leaving 17 injured, Hindustan Times reported.
News agency PTI reported that the blast took place in the fifth unit of the thermal power station-II at a time when the staff was about to begin morning operations at the plant. The injured have been admitted to NLC India hospital.
The accident was confirmed by Cuddalore’s Superintendent of Police (SP) M Sree Abhinav, as quoted by news agency ANI.
The cause of the boiler blast, however, is yet to be ascertained.
The NLC India's integrated mining-cum-power plant is located in Neyveli in Cuddalore district in Tamil Nadu.
Union Home Minister (HM) Amit Shah took to Twitter to condole the death of six workers.
He wrote, "Anguished to learn about the loss of lives due to a blast at Neyveli power plant boiler in Tamil Nadu. Have spoken to @CMOTamilNadu and assured all possible help."
"@CISFHQrs is already on the spot to assist the relief work. Praying for the earliest recovery of those injured," HM Shah added.
It is the second major boiler blast in NLC India. In May, four persons were killed when a boiler in the TPS-II exploded.
The company's TPS II consists of seven units of 210 MW each.
