Udhayanidhi Stalin, the son of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin and the Youth Wing chief of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) took oath as a state cabinet minister at the Raj Bhavan in Chennai, today (14 December).
He has been designated as the Minister for Youth Welfare and Sports Development but will also hold charge of Special Programme Implementation, Poverty Alleviation Programme and Rural Indebtedness.
His elevation is being seen as DMK's ploy to counter the rising popularity of K Annamalai, the state president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) among the youth, and to counter a possible political debut by Tamil actor Vijay.
Prior to the oath taking ceremony, DMK critics had said that this was yet another proof of the party's dynastic politics.
They also questioned the selection of a shubha muhurtam for the ceremony by the DMK, which had consistently called Hindu rituals and beliefs as superstitions.
