The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) today (20 July) held protests all over the state against rising prices of essential commodities like foodgrains and vegetables in the state.
Organising secretary D Jayakumar, former Finance minister C Ponnaiyan, and former MP N Balaganga, were among the leaders present at the protest in Chennai. They wore garlands made of vegetables as a symbolic measure.
Jayakumar said that corruption was rampant in the government and this had affected all walks of life. He criticised Chief Minister MK Stalin for not being able to keep the prices under check.
According to the Consumer Price Index (CPI) data released by the central government earlier this month, Tamil Nadu witnessed a year-on-year inflation of 6.41 per cent, which was one of the highest among major states.
Recently, in a letter to Union Food and Public Distribution minister Piyush Goyal, requesting 10000 MT of wheat and Tur Dal from the central stock, Chief Minister MK Stalin mentioned that according to data from May 2023, inflation in cereals was 12.65 per cent and 6.56 per cent in pulses.
