Intelligence inputs suggest possibility of “spectacular” attack on religious sites and public places in Uttar Pradesh. As a result, state police has tightened security in all districts, reported Manish Chandra Pandey and Gulam Jeelani for Hindustan Times.
The “anti-national elements” are reportedly trained by Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence, or ISI, and are trying to blend in with the crowd as Hindu saints.
The report quotes an official letter as saying,
A group of 17-18 anti-national elements, trained in Hindu rituals, is planning a spectacular incident at prominent religious sites and other sensitive spots in the guise of sadhus.
This comes just two days after the Delhi Police special cell, in a joint operation with the Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terror Squad, arrested three Islamic State suspects from Jalandhar, Mumbai and Bijnor.
Uttar Pradesh’s new director general of police, Sulkhan Singh, said to Hindustan Times that he “won’t be able to comment immediately”, but that they were “capable of neutralising any threat.”

Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
