West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has expressed displeasure over central forces firing in the air while trying to control an angry mob inside a polling booth in Birbhum district during the fourth phase of the Lok Sabha polls, Press Trust of India has reported.
The incident happened inside a polling booth in Dubrajpur area where an angry mob gathered after people were not allowed to enter the booth without their mobile phone. This soon began developing into a clash and the Central Forces had to resort to firing in the air to maintain control.
Following this incident, Mamata expressed her displeasure at the central forces, “I have heard that the CRPF fired inside a booth in Dubrajpur. I am yet to get the detailed report. CRPF personnel can be deputed outside booths, but they do not have the right to lathi-charge or fire”.
Mamata also added that the law and order is a state subject and if the central forces have to carry out a routine march they have to do it along with the state police.

Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
