Chief Minister (CM) of Assam State Sarbananda Sonowal has constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the acts of violence during the protests against the recent amendments made to the Citizenship Act by the Parliament, reports Asian News International (ANI).

“Whoever was involved will not be spared. A special investigation team (SIT) has been constituted,” Sonowal said in Guwahati on Friday (20 December).

CM Sonowal also assured that “Assam will remain with the Assamese people”, and that the state government would bring in whatever legislation is required to ensure the same.

CM Sonowal also added that Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi and Union Minister for Home Affairs Amit Shah have assured that all adequate measures will be taken for the implementation of Clause 6 of the Assam Accord.

The development comes after the protests eased across the state and the mobile internet services were restored. In a bid to avoid any untoward incident after restoration of internet services, the Assam police has also requested the citizens to stay cautious while posting or sharing unverified or provocative information on social media.
