At least three personnel of the Assam Rifles were martyred and five injured due to an ambush on Wednesday (29 July) night in Manipur's Chandel district, near India-Myanmar border, journalist Shiv Aroor tweeted.
The incident occurred bewteen 6:30 to 7:00pm when soldiers of Assam Rifles were returning to their posts from Khongtal, nearly 3km from the border, where they had launched an operation three days back, as per an official cited in this News18 report.
While returning from the operation, the patrol party was hit by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) followed by an ambush close to Sajik Tampak village, around 2 km from the base.
The martyred soldiers have been identified as Havildar Pranay Kalita, Rifleman YM Konyak and Rifleman Ratan Salim and the injured have been admitted to a hospital.
While no militant outfit has claimed the responsibility of the attack yet, it has been suspected that People's Liberation Army of Manipur men are behind it. However, an official statement from the force is still awaited.

Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
