Going on an outright offensive against the United States (US), the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) regime led by President Xi Jinping on Monday (10 August) announced sanctions against 11 US politicians and heads of organisations, including elected Senators Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz, reports Economic Times.
Announcing the unspecified unilateral sanctions, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian asserted that the 11 had "performed badly" on issues concerning Hong Kong. China has cracked down on the opposition voices in Hong Kong with the imposition of draconian national security law.
It should be noted that the number of individuals against whom China has imposed sanctions matches exactly with the number of Hong Kong and Chinese officials against whom the US had pressed sanctions last week.
Lijian also accused the US of blatantly intervening in Hong Kong affairs and China's internal affairs. He charged the US of violating international law and basic norms of international relations.
The developments come as the US-China relations have hit an all-time nadir, with each of the two world's largest economies and military powers taking to offensive stance against the other on multiple fronts.

Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
