Uddhav Thackeray Orders Shifting of Metro Car Shed From Aarey To Kanjurmarg

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has announced that the metro car shed project will be shifted from Aarey Colony to a government-owned land in Kanjurmarg, Livemint has reported.

“The land will be available at zero rate,” he said and added that the building available in Aarey forest for this initiative will be used for another public purpose. Around Rs 100 crore has been spent on the Aarey project so far.

Moreover, 800 additional acres of Aarey land has been declared as a forest area, an increase from the earlier measure of 600 acres.

"The orders to the effect were issued last night and will take the new forest area to 800 acres that will be a boon to the city's environment," said Thackeray.

Incidentally in January it was reported that a high level committee appointed by Thackeray to look at possible alternative sites for building a car shed had said that shifting the car shed site from Aarey would not be viable.

The committee had cited issues such as increased costs, logistical issues and delays in the completion of the said metro line's construction to bolster its view. A marsh at Kanjurmarg which was considered as an alternate site by the committee was found to be un-viable.
