Uttar Pradesh government has handed over the case of rape of a 16-year-old girl and the death of the her father while in custody of the state police to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Zee News has reported.

According to the report, an FIR has been registered against rape accused Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar, 50, under the provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.

Soon after reports emerged that he could surrender, the accused MLA turned up at the residence of Lucknow city's top cop in a convoy of 20 vehicles. He, however, left half-an-hour later, saying he had come to prove he is not absconding.

The special team constituted to look into the case has come across circumstantial evidence that support some of the girl’s allegations, NDTV reported.

The investigation team headed by Additional Director General of Police (Lucknow Zone) Rajeev Krishna, which visited the girl’s village for investigation, has submitted the preliminary report in the matter.

Addressing a press conference earlier today, Uttar Prdesh Director General of Police O P Singh said that if at all Sengar has to be arrested, it will be done by the CBI.

"Now that the case has been given to CBI, they will decide on arrest," said Singh, adding, "He has only been accused so far and not convicted".
