Democrats in U.S Congress plan to introduce an article of impeachment against President Donald Trump as early as Monday over accusations of fomenting a “coup” at the Capitol building.
In a letter to members of the House, Nancy Pelosi, the speaker, described Trump’s actions a “horrific assault on our democracy” and called on the president to resign or face impeachment proceedings again.
A group of Democrats, led by Reps. David Cicilline (D-R.I.), Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) and Ted Lieu (D-Calif.), has drafted a formal impeachment resolution titled "Incitement of Insurrection", which they plan to introduce on Monday. The measure would impeach Trump for high crimes and misdemeanors “by willfully inciting violence against the government of the United States.”
If passed, it would make Trump the first president in the nation’s history to be impeached twice. Democrats hold a majority in the U.S Congress. The Senate would then hold a trial and vote on his removal from office, with a two-thirds majority required for conviction.
Trump was last year impeached by the House over allegations he pressured the president of Ukraine to help uncover alleged corrupt dealings of Joe Biden. But acquitted by the Republican-controlled Senate
