The Lucknow–Kanpur Expressway is nearing completion, promising to drastically cut travel time between the two major cities of Uttar Pradesh to just one hour.
Officials from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) confirmed during a recent review meeting, attended by the Defence Minister’s advisor and senior administrative officials that only minor finishing works remain.
These are expected to be completed by the first or second week of December, after which preparations for the formal inauguration will begin, Times of India reported.
The 63 km long, six-lane access-controlled expressway, expandable to eight lanes, has been designated as National Expressway 6.
Running parallel to the existing NH 27, it connects Lucknow and Kanpur through key locations such as Bani, Kantha, and Amarsas, before terminating near Azad Marg, Kanpur.
It will also intersect the Ganga Expressway in Unnao district, enhancing connectivity across the Awadh region.
The expressway’s foundation stone was initially laid in March 2019 and later again on 5 January 2022, following its official notification as NE 6 in the Gazette of India in December 2020.
Along the route, five toll plazas are under construction at Miranpur Pinwat, Khandedev, Bani (Lucknow), Lalganj in Unnao, and near Shuklaganj Bypass in Kanpur.
Three rest areas at Aderwa (Nevarna), Padri Khurd, and Unnao will provide essential passenger amenities, including a 10 bed hospital, trauma centre, and ambulance services.
Officials noted that ramps have been built at six locations to ensure smooth entry and exit, while over Rs 800 crore has been distributed to farmers for land acquisition across 42 villages in Lucknow and Unnao.
“Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has already issued directives that no liquor shops will be allowed on this expressway,” an official said.
“The Unnao to Banthra package of Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway has been completed. The 18 km elevated section in Lucknow is still under construction. The expressway construction is scheduled to be completed by Nov 30, 2025. After this, the inauguration date will be determined,” NHAI Regional Project Director Sanjeev Sharma was quoted as saying.
