Vijay Mallya is negotiating with Indian government agencies to return to India voluntarily and settle his dues, Times of India has reported. The verdict of the extradition case pursued by Government of India in United Kingdom (UK) is expected within weeks. If the government wins the case, Mallya will end up in a jail as an under-trial.

Mallya however, refused to comment on the matter in a telephonic conversation with TOI. He is quoted to have said, "It is ridiculous, all these breaking news stories in India. I have not heard anything of the sort, but even if I do, I will not comment on anything."

On 22 June, Mallya had filed a 500 page document before the Karnataka High Court embarking assets worth Rs 13,900 crore to repay his loans. Mallya is accused of defaulting on loans amounting to Rs 10,000 crore. The liquor baron had also released his letters to the Prime Minister and Finance Minister wherein he had offered to settle his dues.

If Mallya returns to India, cases against him will continue. Sources speaking to TOI have said that he would be arrested upon his return. Further the report claims that Mallya has approached the Enforcement Directorate, even though the extradition case is pursued by Central Bureau of Investigation. If Mallya wants to return to India and face Indian courts, the Indian government will ask the UK government to return his passport. The extradition case will die a natural death if he returns before the verdict is delivered by UK courts.
