Empowerment of people with disabilities by ensuring proper education and employment opportunities for them is this government’s top priority, Union Minister Satyapal Singh has said, reports Indian Express.
The minister while presiding over the NCPEDP-Mindtree Helen Keller Awards 2018 said that only one per cent of the people with disabilities get to go to schools.
“To address the issue, the government has recently announced five per cent reservation for people with disabilities in all kinds of educational institutions,” the Union Minister of State for Human Resource Development said.
“People with disabilities require real empowerment through the right kind of education and suitable employment," Singh said.
“All jobs are suitable for persons with disabilities if we provide equal opportunities and reasonable accommodation. We know of autistic people involved in software testing,” Arman Ali, the executive director of the National Centre for Promotion of Employment for Disabled People (NCPEDP) said.
Seven people and five organisations, who have contributed to promoting employment opportunities for persons with disabilities in India, received the NCPEDP-Mindtree Helen Keller Awards 2018, at the event.

Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
