Tragedy struck 32-year old K Ragupathy’s family as he was killed in an accident in Coimbatore, his hometown, on Saturday (November 25), as reported by NDTV.

Raghu worked as a software engineer in the United States and was in India for 10 days, scheduled to return on 26 November. Before leaving, he wanted to visit the Palani Murugan Temple for which he was travelling to the Singanallur bus stand, planning to take a bus from there on.

On his way to the bus stop, however, he tragically collided with a protruding wooden pole, which was a part of a temporary signboard erected for MGR centenary celebrations. As he fell off the bike, he was run over by a still-unidentified heavy vehicle resulting in his death on the spot.

“Though the youth had worn helmet, it was thrown off in the impact of the accident,” said an official from Traffic Investigation Wing-East.

As news of the disaster spread, social media, under the tag #WhoKilledRaghu, has erupted in anger, demanding those responsible be held accountable.

People are also calling out the authorities for allowing the illegal structures to be constructed way before the centenary event was to be held on 3 December. There are also calls for the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam ministers to meet the grieving family whose dreams have been shattered by the unfortunate accident. Others lamented the social apathy for the accident.

As anger on social media spreads, “Who Killed Ragu?” had been painted at the spot in large white letters by unidentified activists.
