Calling the withdrawal of old high-value currency notes the biggest scam post-independence, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today (27 December) asked if Prime Minister Narendra Modi will resign at the end of 50 days if things do not improve.
Addressing a joint press conference by several opposition parties in New Delhi, Banerjee, also the Trinamool Congress supremo, said the move was "illegal" and "unconstitutional", and had set the economy back by 20 years.
Accusing Modi of destroying the country's federal structure, she said that Modi neither took parliament into confidence before taking such a huge decision nor bothered to make a single statement in Parliament after implementing it. "This is not just unethical but also illegal and unconstitutional," said Banerjee.

Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
