Fullfilling a long-pending demand of citizen groups and civil society organisations in the city, the work on Coimbatore metro rail project is likely begin as early as December next year, The Hindu reported.
Earlier last year, Tamilnadu Chief Minister Edapadi Palanisamy had announced the metro rail project for Coimbatore
French urban/rail public transport civil engineering consulting firm Systra MVA conducted the feasibility study of the proposed metro rail project in Coimbatore. It has submitted its report to Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL). Feasibility study was conducted based on consultation with various stakeholders – various government departments like National Highways, State Highways, Coimbatore Corporation, Coimbatore district administration, Transport Department, Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation among others
The Hindu quoted sources in Coimbatore Corporation as saying that State Government agenciesare looking to start the earth work by this time next year.
The state government is proposing to construct a 10.6-km long flyover from Uppilipalayam to SITRA.
According to Urban Transport News portal, the feasibility study report of Coimbatore Metro rail project has identified four corridors covering a total distance of 136 km to be implemented as part of the project. The details of corridors are-
The corridors have been planned based on vehicular and pedestrian traffic on the city’s main roads including Trichy Road, Sathyamangalam Road, Avinashi Road, and Mettupalayam Road.
The Government had asked the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) for help to execute the project.CMRL will prepare now a detailed project report (DPR)
