24 airports (check full list here) across northern and western India were shut down for civil operations on Friday (9 May) amid escalating tensions following Pakistan’s missile and drone attacks on Indian territory.

The unprecedented move, confirmed by the Ministry of Civil Aviation, comes after a night of intense cross-border hostilities that saw Pakistan attempt to target multiple Indian military installations using drones and missiles.

The closure, which affects key airports including Chandigarh, Srinagar, Amritsar, Jammu, and Jodhpur, is expected to remain in effect until at least 10 May, significantly disrupting air travel and commerce in the region.

Here’s a comprehensive guide for passengers on what’s changing, which airports are affected, and what advisories have been issued.

Are Major Airports Like Delhi and Mumbai Affected?

Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Chennai airports remain operational, but passengers should expect delays and possible cancellations due to airspace restrictions and rerouting. Delhi airport authorities have clarified that operations are normal, but travelers should check with airlines for real-time updates.

What Are the New Security Measures?

The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) has mandated enhanced security at all airports nationwide. This includes:

Secondary Ladder Point Checks (SLPC) at boarding gates.

Ban on visitor entry into terminal buildings.

Deployment of Air Marshals.

Longer security screening times.

What Are Airlines Advising?

Air India, IndiGo, Akasa Air, and SpiceJet have urged passengers to arrive at least three hours before departure due to stricter security and check-in procedures.

All airlines advise checking official channels for flight status and updates, and to avoid relying on social media rumors.

What Should Passengers Do?

Arrive early-at least three hours before your scheduled flight.

Check your flight status directly with your airline before heading to the airport.

Be prepared for longer security checks and possible delays.

Follow only official advisories for accurate information.

With the situation evolving rapidly, staying informed and allowing extra time for travel is essential for all air passengers in the affected regions.
