Mumbai Gets Major Infrastructure Push: CM Fadnavis Unveils New BDD Chawl Homes, SCLR Extension, And Key MMRDA Projects

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, along with Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, inaugurated the Phase 1 of Worli BDD Chawl Redevelopment Project on Thursday (14 August).

The event saw 556 eligible residents being handed the keys to their new homes.

The redevelopment project, led by the Mumbai Housing and Area Development Board (MHADA), relocates residents from cramped 160 sqft rooms to spacious 500 sqft, two-bedroom ownership flats, provided free of cost.

Described as the largest urban redevelopment project in Asia, the scheme will ultimately benefit over 15,000 residents, with 3,500 homes to be handed over by year-end and a further 3,000 in 2026.

The project spans 86 acres across Worli, Naigaon, and N M Joshi Marg, replacing 207 old chawls. By December, over 3,500 flats are expected to be completed.

The long-awaited extension of the Santacruz–Chembur Link Road (SCLR) was also inagurated today which offers motorists a direct, signal-free route from Kurla to Panbai School near the airport, linking the Eastern and Western Express Highways.

Executed by the MMRDA, the project includes South Asia’s first cable-stayed bridge with a 100 metre horizontal curve, featuring a 215 metre orthotropic steel deck supported by a Y-shaped pylon.

Expected to cut peak-hour travel by 15–20 minutes, it will ease congestion in Vakola, BKC, and LBS Marg, while integrating with the upcoming Phase II SCLR expansion.

Other key infrastructure projects, were also unveiled during the event such as the Mumbai Metro Training Institute, Staff Quarters at Malvani, and the Kalanagar ‘D’ Arm Subflyover.
