Over 200 Maoists, including key leaders Rupesh and Ranita, have surrendered in Chhattisgarh's Bastar region, marking a pivotal moment in country's fight against Naxalism, reported The Times Of India.

Historically, Abujhmarh and North Bastar, located in Chhattisgarh's dense forests, provided ideal hideouts for Maoists.

The challenging terrain allowed these groups to use the area as operational bases and training grounds, making it difficult for security forces to penetrate.

The mass surrender represents both a tactical and symbolic victory.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah called the event a "landmark day" in the effort to purge the Red Corridor of Naxalite influence.

"Abujhmarh and North Bastar that were once terror bases have today been declared free from Naxal terror... A trace of Naxalism exists in south Bastar, which will be wiped out soon by security forces," he stated on X.

Experts attribute the surge in surrenders to the Centre’s dual approach: offering a path to surrender while maintaining strict security pressure.

Many Maoists, including senior leaders, reportedly grew disillusioned with the movement’s direction.

Relentless operations by security forces disrupted Maoist networks, making it harder for them to sustain activities.

The government’s promise of rehabilitation and reintegration into society provided a viable alternative to a life of conflict.

Across Bastar, locals welcomed the surrendered Maoists with red roses, signaling hope for peace in a region long haunted by left-wing extremism.
