Just hours after announcing steep tariffs on Indian imports, former US President Donald Trump revealed a surprise energy partnership with Pakistan.
In a post on his social media platform, Trump said Washington had “just concluded a deal” with Pakistan to jointly develop its “massive oil reserves.”
“We are in the process of choosing the oil company that will lead this partnership. Who knows, maybe they'll be selling oil to India some day!” he added, in what many saw as a pointed jab at New Delhi.
The announcement comes on the heels of Trump’s decision to impose a 25 per cent tariff on Indian imports, citing India’s “obnoxious” trade barriers and continued energy and defence ties with Russia.
The back-to-back moves signal a dramatic reshaping of Trump’s South Asia approach, one that may tilt the US closer to Islamabad even as it deepens trade tensions with New Delhi.
While details of the oil deal remain unclear, analysts say it marks a symbolic win for Pakistan, and a strategic message aimed squarely at India.
