Air India's London-Bound Plane With 242 Passengers And Crew Members On Board Crashes Near Ahmedabad Airport In Gujarat

An Air India aircraft carrying over 240 passengers on board crashed in Gujarat's Ahmedabad on Thursday (12 June).

Visuals on social media from the site of accident show a thick plume of grey smoking rising from the ground.

The plane reportedly crashed near the Ahmedabad airport.

The Air India flight to London crashed shortly after take-off at the Ahmedabad airport on Thursday afternoon.

The flight, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, carried 242 people, including 230 passengers and 12 crew members, India Today reported.

The aircraft took off around 1.38 pm from the airport.

The plane crashed nine minutes after being given clearance for take-off, Indian Express reported, citing officials.

Immediately after departure from Runway 23, the aircraft crashed on the ground outside the airport perimeter.

"The flight, which departed from Ahmedabad at 1338 hrs, was carrying 242 passengers and crew members on board the Boeing 787-8 aircraft. Of these, 169 are Indian nationals, 53 are British nationals, 1 Canadian national and 7 Portuguese nationals," Air India said in a statement.

Emergency services rushed to the spot following the crash, including seven fire engines.

The AI-171 Air India plane was reportedly bound to London's Gatwich airport from Ahmedabad.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has spoken with Gujarat Chief Minister,Home Minister and the Police Commissioner regarding the plane crash incident, news agency ANI reported.

He also assured to provide Central government assistance.

Meanwhile, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has dispatched three teams, comprising 90 personnel, from Gandhinagar to the plane crash site.

Three more NDRF teams are being moved from Vadodara.
