The Delhi Public Works Department (PWD) has proposed extending the under-construction Munak Canal elevated road up to Kashmere Gate, PWD Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh announced on Sunday (2 November).
The expansion will include a 4 km tunnel between Inderlok and Kashmere Gate ISBT, designed to create a high-speed corridor linking North Delhi with Central Delhi.
Singh said the department has already initiated the preparation of a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the new stretch. The move, he noted, forms part of the Delhi government’s broader strategy to strengthen road infrastructure and ease chronic congestion in North Delhi.
This corridor is expected to be a major relief for commuters from North and Northwest Delhi as well as those travelling from Haryana. Once operational, it will provide a direct, high-speed route to Central Delhi.
The elevated road currently terminates at Inderlok, but under the new plan, it will continue underground through a tunnel connecting directly to Kashmere Gate ISBT.
The completed corridor will offer a signal-free route from the Delhi-Haryana border to Central Delhi, intersecting key arterial roads such as the Outer Ring Road and the Wazirabad corridor.
The project is expected to cut travel time by up to 40 per cent, especially benefiting vehicles arriving from Sonipat, Rohtak and the Urban Extension Road (UER). It is also anticipated to ease bottlenecks at Mukarba Chowk, Azadpur and Roshanara Road.
