Telugu actor Allu Arjun was released from a Hyderabad jail on Saturday (14 December) morning, a day after his arrest over a stampede outside a Hyderabad theatre screening 'Pushpa 2' earlier this month, which resulted in one woman's death.

The actor reportedly left the jail premises from the back gate with his father Allu Aravind and father-in-law Kancharla Chandrasekhar Reddy - who had come to receive him.

Allu Arjun's lawyer, Ashok Reddy, criticised the arrest, calling it an "illegal detention," alleging that jail authorities delayed his release even after receiving the Telangana High Court’s order on Friday (13 December).

"They received an order copy from the High Court but despite that, they didn't release him...They will have to answer. This is an illegal detention. We will take legal action...As of now, he has been released," he said, NDTV reported.

Allu Arjun was taken into custody from his residence in Jubilee Hills, Hyderabad on Friday, hours after he returned from Delhi after attending the success meet of 'Pushpa 2'.

While a lower court had ordered 14-day judicial custody, the Telangana High Court later granted him interim bail for four weeks, citing his right to liberty.

"He couldn't be detained just because he's an actor...he cannot be held like this," the court said.

The High Court directed the actor to seek regular bail from the lower court.

The case stems from a stampede on 4 December at a Hyderabad theatre screening 'Pushpa 2,' which happened when Allu Arjun made what the police called an "unscheduled" visit to the auditorium. A woman was killed and her son was injured.

Hyderabad police filed a case against Allu Arjun, his security team, and the theatre management following a complaint by the victim's husband.

According to the police, there was no intimation from the theatre management or the actor's team that they would be visiting the theatre.

The theatre management also did not make any additional provisions regarding security to manage the crowd, officials said.

On 8 December, police arrested the theatre owner, general manager, and security manager.

However, following Allu Arjun's arrest, the victim's husband reportedly came forward to defend the actor, expressing his willingness to withdraw the case.

"I am ready to withdraw the case. I was not aware of the arrest. Allu Arjun has nothing to do with the stampede in which my wife passed away," he said.
