Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk on Saturday (5 July) announced the formation of a new political party in the United States, aimed at challenging what he described as the country's entrenched “one-party system.”

Musk, once a top political donor and key ally of US President Donald Trump during the 2024 election, broke ranks after a dramatic fallout over federal spending.

As head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), Musk had pushed for sharp cuts to bureaucracy and federal jobs, but clashed with Trump over the President’s sweeping domestic spending agenda.

That dispute escalated into open political warfare.

Musk strongly opposed the US President’s flagship legislation—dubbed the “One Big Beautiful Bill”—arguing it would saddle the country with unsustainable debt.

The bill, which passed Congress and was signed into law, is projected by experts to add $3.4 trillion to the US deficit over the next decade.

“They will lose their primary next year if it is the last thing I do on this Earth,” Musk said earlier in the week, referring to lawmakers who campaigned on fiscal restraint but voted in favor of the bill.

On Saturday, Musk revealed his answer to the growing partisan deadlock: the America Party.

“When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy,” he posted on X, the platform he owns.

“Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom," he added.

The announcement was timed around US Independence Day, when Musk posted a poll asking Americans whether they wanted “independence from the two-party (some would say uniparty) system.”

The poll drew more than 1.2 million responses, with a around 2-to-1 majority in favor of a new party.

“You want a new political party and you shall have it!” Musk said.

Musk also posted a meme showing a two-headed snake labeled “End the Uniparty,” further underscoring his message that both Democrats and Republicans are complicit in expanding government waste and debt.

While the long-term impact of the America Party remains unclear, Musk has already outlined a tactical plan.

He proposed focusing on just 2–3 Senate seats and 8–10 House races in the 2026 midterms, aiming to make the party a “deciding vote” on key legislation.

The feud between Musk and Trump has grown increasingly personal.

After Musk publicly condemned the bill and its backers, Trump threatened to revoke federal funding for Musk’s businesses and even floated the idea of deporting him.

“We’ll have to take a look,” Trump said when asked about the possibility—despite Musk being a US citizen since 2002.
