On Tuesday (7 January), Union Home Minister Amit Shah underscored the necessity for Indian investigative bodies to employ contemporary technology and methods for apprehending fugitives.
This statement was made during the unveiling of the 'Bharatpol' portal at Bharat Mandapam, a platform designed to expedite international support for these agencies.
During the inauguration of 'Bharatpol', the Minister emphasised the significance of the real-time interface, a key feature of the portal created by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
He stated that this feature would facilitate seamless communication between central and state agencies and the Interpol, thereby accelerating their investigations.
"It is time that we use modern technology and techniques to nab and bring to justice the fugitives who absconded from India after committing a crime," Shah said.
"We have to keep an eye on global challenges and update our internal systems. Bharatpol is a step in that direction," he said adding that the new portal will facilitate central and state investigative agencies in sharing and acquiring information regarding their cases from the 195 member countries of Interpol.
The trio of new criminal legislations introduced by the Modi administration last year are designed to improve the conduct of trials involving fugitives and absconders.
"I would urge the CBI to take the responsibility of training the states for capacity building regarding Bharatpol and also for the three new criminal laws," Shah said.
"We need to institutionalise these systems along with the knowledge of various kinds of Interpol notices and their procedures," he said as the responsibility for affairs related to Interpol falls under the purview of the CBI and the National Central Bureau of India.
