In a major breakthrough, the governments of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh reached key agreements to resolve long-standing water disputes over the Krishna and Godavari rivers, reported India Today.
The Union Ministry of Jal Shakti hosted the meeting in New Delhi, with Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu in attendance.
Andhra Pradesh accepted Telangana’s proposal to install telemetry systems on major water reservoirs and projects. This step aims to ensure transparent tracking and accurate measurement of water usage.
Both states also agreed on the allocation of river management board offices: the Godavari River Management Board will operate from Hyderabad, while the Krishna River Management Board will be based in Andhra Pradesh.
This decision intends to streamline water-sharing operations and reduce administrative hurdles.
Andhra Pradesh also agreed to Telangana’s request to immediately begin repairs on the Srisailam project, a crucial hydroelectric and irrigation structure shared by both states.
To address other unresolved issues, the states agreed to form a joint committee of officers and technical experts within a week. This panel will review all pending matters related to Krishna and Godavari water projects.
This committee will work collaboratively to study the outstanding concerns and suggest viable solutions to ensure equitable and efficient water sharing.
