Arnold Dix, an expert in tunneling and underground construction has come under the limelight for playing a crucial role in rescuing the 41 workers who were trapped in Uttarkashi's Silkyara tunnel.
Known for his expertise in legal, environmental, political, and ethical aspects of underground construction, Dix joined the rescue operations on 20 November.
Holding degrees in Science and Law from Monash University, Melbourne, Australia, Dix is also recognised as an accomplished lawyer.
Apart from his technical expertise, he actively participated in the rescue efforts, joining hands along with the local spiritual leaders in prayer for the safe evacuation of the workers.
"The mountain has told us one thing, that is to be humble. I feel good. I've never said it before... The drilling along the top of the mountain is coming along perfectly. In the tunnel, it is coming along very well. So, I feel good," Dix remarked during a press briefing, as reported by India Today.
As the operation neared completion, the Australian expert expressed his satisfaction as rat-hole mining experts made the final breakthrough, ensuring the evacuation of all 41 workers.
Expressing gratitude for the collaborative effort, Dix stated, "It's been my honor to serve, and as a parent, it's been my honor to help out all the parents getting their children home. India has the best engineers... It was just a joy to be part of this successful mission. I have to go to the temple because I promised to say thank you for what happened. If you haven't noticed, we have just witnessed a miracle."
After the successful operation the rescued workers underwent initial medical check-ups and were transported to a hospital for further examination, concluding the 17-day rescue operation.
