Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Wednesday (27 November) emphasised the need to make existing laws stricter to tackle the issue of vulgar content circulating on social media platforms.
Addressing the Lok Sabha, the Union Information and Broadcasting Minister urged the Parliamentary Standing Committee to deliberate on the matter and called for a consensus to frame more strict laws in this regard.
During the Question Hour, Vaishnaw noted that editorial checks in the past determined the appropriateness of content. However, with those controls no longer in place, social media, while being a medium for press freedom, remains unregulated and rife with vulgar content.
There is a need to make existing laws more stringent to curb vulgar content on social media platforms, Vaishnaw said amid din in the House, Indian Express reported.
Vaishnaw's remarks came in response to BJP MP Arun Govil’s queries regarding the current mechanisms for controlling the illegal telecast of vulgar and sex-related content through social media platforms and whether the government proposes to make the existing laws more stringent keeping in view the fact that the said laws are not much effective to stop misuse of these platforms.
