At Least 30 Killed In Two Days In Northeast India After Heavy Rainfall Triggers Flash Floods And Landslides

In the last two days, landslides and flash floods amid heavy rain killed at least 30 people in the northeast India, reported NDTV.

In Assam, five people were killed, while nine died in Arunachal Pradesh due to flash floods and landslides.

Seven members of two families were killed in Arunachal Pradesh's East Kameng district when their car was swept off the road due to a landslide.

The weather department has issued a red and orange alert for parts of Assam, as well as an orange and yellow alert for the rest of the northeast.

In Assam, five people were killed in landslides in the last 24 hours as a result of incessant rain, which caused floods in six districts and affected over 10,000 people. 

According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), all five deaths occurred in the Kamrup Metropolitan District.

On Friday (30 May), Urban Affairs Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah said three women were killed in a landslide in the Bonda area on the outskirts of Guwahati. 

In Guwahati, a 67-year-old record for the most rain in a single day was broken with 111 mm rainfall.

Water levels of many northeastern rivers, including the Brahmaputra, have risen.

In Arunachal Pradesh, seven people died last night (31 May) when a landslide swept a Brezza car into a deep gorge on the NH-13 stretch between Bana and Seppa.

A man and a woman were killed in Arunachal's Ziro late last night (31 May) by a massive landslide that struck the Cabbage Garden neighborhood and a nearby restaurant close to Pine Grove.

After hours of nonstop rain, the landslide struck while the victims, who were both residents of Assam's Lakhimpur, were working at the restaurant.

Their bodies were recovered and handed over to their relatives, according to DySP Ojing Lego.

Search and rescue operations were promptly carried out by the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), and residents. search and rescue operations.
