At least four people were killed and 100 others were injured after six compartments of the Kamakhya Junction-bound 12506 North East Express derailed near Raghunathpur railway station in Bihar's Buxar district.

In response to the emergency situation, the leading hospitals in Patna, namely Patna Medical College and Hospital, Nalanda Medical College and Hospital, and Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences, were alerted.

Additionally, a fleet of over a dozen ambulances was dispatched from the state capital to assist at the location.

The incident occurred around 9.50 pm when the 12506 Northeast Express, traveling from Anand Vihar Terminal in Delhi to Kamakhya Junction in Guwahati, had departed from Buxar station and was in close proximity to Raghunathpur railway station, according to the local police.

Six compartments of the train derailed, causing injuries to several passengers.

Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav said that he has spoken to the Disaster Management Department, Health Department, and the district officials of Buxar and Bhojpur to speed up the relief and rescue work.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's office also said that they are "closely monitoring the unfortunate derailment" of the train in Raghunathpur. They added that they are in touch with the district authorities in Buxar and other agencies.

This incident comes just over four months after a triple train accident in Odisha's Balasore, which resulted in the loss of 296 lives.

The accident occurred near the Bahanaga Bazar railway station in Balasore district when the Chennai-bound Coromandel Express collided with a stationary freight train, causing some of its coaches to derail. Minutes later, the Yeshvantpur Express en route to Howrah collided with the derailed coaches.
