The Uttar Pradesh police has arrested the main accused in the Bahraich Durga Puja communal violence from near the Nepal border.

The accused, Sarfaraz was attempting to escape but was captured after an encounter with the police.

Both Sarfaraz and a co-accused, Talib, were injured and are receiving medical treatment at a local hospital, according to the police, NDTV reported.

The communal violence broke out in the Mahrajganj area of Mansoor village on Sunday evening after a dispute over music played on loudspeakers during the Durga idol immersion procession.

As tensions escalated, the situation turned violent with incidents of stone pelting and gunfire, resulting in six injuries.

One man, who suffered bullet wounds, succumbed to his injuries.

The family of Ram Gopal Mishra, a resident of Rehua Mansoor village, had refused to cremate the body and held a sit-down protest.

They relented after assurances of action from the police and administration officials.

The unrest intensified the following day with reports of arson and further violence in certain areas.

To restore order, the police conducted flag marches.

Over 30 persons were detained in connection with the clashes.
