The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced a Rs 51 crore cash reward for Team India after their historic ICC Women’s World Cup triumph against South Africa in Navi Mumbai, marking the country’s first-ever world title across both ODI and T20I formats, The Hindu reported.
Speaking to ANI, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said, “In 1983, Kapil Dev brought about a new era and encouragement in cricket by making India win the World Cup. The same excitement and encouragement have been introduced by women today. Harmanpreet Kaur and her team have not just won the trophy today, they have won the hearts of all Indians. They have paved the way for the next generation of women cricketers... Women’s cricket already reached its next level when our team defeated Australia in the semifinals.”
He noted that under Jay Shah’s tenure as BCCI secretary from 2019 to 2024, several major reforms were introduced in women’s cricket, including the implementation of pay parity.
He highlighted that ICC Chairman Jay Shah had recently increased the women’s prize money by 300 per cent, from $2.88 million to $14 million, significantly boosting global recognition for the sport.
The BCCI also announced a Rs 51 crore reward for the entire World Cup-winning contingent, including players, coaches, and support staff.
In the final, India posted 298/7, driven by Shafali Verma’s 87, Deepti Sharma’s 58, and Richa Ghosh’s quick 34.
South Africa’s chase faltered despite Laura Wolvaardt’s century (101), as Deepti Sharma claimed a five-wicket haul (5/39), becoming the first Indian woman to take a fifer in a World Cup final.
India bowled out South Africa for 246, sealing a 52-run victory and creating history.
