The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) is set to finalise its ambitious 197 km feasibility study by July 2025, paving the way for a significant expansion of the Namma Metro network, The Hindu reported.

The study, spanning eight key corridors, will be submitted to the Karnataka government for review and approval.

Among the proposed extensions is the Airport Line extension to Devanahalli, recently announced in the State Budget by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

Other corridors extend beyond city limits to Harohalli, Bidadi, Devanahalli, and Tumakuru, championed by Deputy CM D K Shivakumar, Home Minister G Parameshwara, and Food and Civil Supplies Minister K H Muniyappa.

However, the opposition BJP, including city MPs Tejasvi Surya and P C Mohan, has objected, arguing that suburban and circular rail systems would be more cost-effective for outer regions.

The proposed 287 km circular rail network, estimated at Rs 23,000 crore, is planned to enhance connectivity to Devanahalli, Doddaballapur, and Malur.

The feasibility study covers key corridors, including a 68 km route from Kalena Agrahara to Kadugodi Tree Park, a 52.41 km link to Tumakuru, and a 15 km stretch connecting KR Puram to Hoskote.

Officials estimate that around 100 km of the proposed corridors will move forward for development.

“The feasibility study is an extensive exercise, incorporating vital components such as traffic flow assessments, station location planning, cost evaluation, and sustainability considerations,” said a senior BMRCL official.

Once submitted, the state government will decide which routes will advance to the detailed project report (DPR) stage, followed by land acquisition, environmental clearances, financial planning, and eventual construction.

If approved, this expansion will take Bengaluru’s metro network to nearly 350 km, significantly improving connectivity and urban mobility.
