In a significant boost to Bihar’s infrastructure, the long-awaited Kacchi Dargah-Bidupur 6-lane Ganga Bridge connecting Patna to Raghopur was inaugurated today (23 June) by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.

Touted as India’s longest extra-dosed cable-stayed bridge, this 19.76 km greenfield project is set to drastically improve north-south connectivity across the state.

Constructed by the Bihar State Road Development Corporation Limited (BSRDCL), the Rs 4,988 crore project links the Patna-Bakhtiyarpur four-lane road on NH-30 at Sabalpur to NH-103 between Chak Sikandar and Ghazipur Chowk in Samastipur district, via Raghopur and Bidupur in Vaishali.

The bridge, featuring 150 metre spans and 15.2 mm imported cables from South Korea, is being funded by the Asian Development Bank.

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who has closely overseen the project since its inception, expressed satisfaction over its completion.

“We were continuously working for the construction of this 6 lane Ganga Bridge. I had regularly inspected the construction work and instructed the officials to complete the construction of the bridge soon,” he said in a post on X.

The bridge will offer year-round road connectivity between the capital Patna and the Raghopur Diara region, an area often cut off during monsoons.

Kumar highlighted the wider benefits of the development, saying, “With the inauguration of Kacchi Dargah-Bidupur 6 lane Ganga Bridge, the people of Raghopur Diara region will get road connectivity with the capital Patna for the whole year. Agriculture, industry and other businesses will develop rapidly in this area.”

The new bridge is also expected to ease congestion on the ageing Mahatma Gandhi Setu by offering an alternative route for commuters and goods between North and South Bihar.

“We are making the movement easier by continuously constructing quality roads and bridges in the state,” Kumar added in his post.
