The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday (13 August) accused Congress of electoral malpractice and questioned the timing of Sonia Gandhi’s name to the voter list, reported Hindustan Times.

BJP leader Anurag Thakur, in a press conference, alleged that Congress and other opposition leaders won seats using “ghuspaithi voters” (intruder voters), countering Rahul Gandhi’s recent “vote chori” charge.

Thakur criticised Congress for opposing the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar, claiming the party relies on one group for its vote bank and engages in “appeasement politics.”

He cited cases of duplicate voters, fake addresses, manipulated age, and mass voting in constituencies like Raebareli, Diamond Harbour, and Kannauj.

Meanwhile, BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya raised doubts over Sonia Gandhi’s voter ID.

“Sonia Gandhi’s tryst with India’s voters’ list is riddled with glaring violations of electoral law. This perhaps explains Rahul Gandhi’s fondness for regularising ineligible and illegal voters, and his opposition to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR),” he posted on X.

Malviya alleged her name first appeared on the electoral rolls in 1980, three years before she became an Indian citizen and while holding Italian citizenship.

He claimed the name was added during the 1 January 1980 revision in New Delhi, appearing at serial number 388 in polling station 145.

Following an outcry in 1982, her name was deleted, only to reappear in 1983, Malviya alleged.

"But even her reinstatement raised serious questions. In the fresh revision of the electoral rolls that year, Sonia Gandhi was listed at serial number 236 in polling station 140. The qualifying date for registration was January 1, 1983 — yet she was granted Indian citizenship only on April 30, 1983," Malviya said.

“If this isn’t blatant electoral malpractice, what is?” Malviya asked.

The entire EC vs Rahul Gandhi episode started after the Congress leader's press conference of Thursday (7 August), in which he presented what he termed as an “atom bomb” of proofs over poll body resorting to "vote chori".

He spoke of irregularities like “one crore mystery voters,” destruction of CCTV footage, thousands of fake voters, and refusal by the EC to share voter-related data.
