The BJP has intensified efforts to elect its next national president, with senior leaders now focused on selecting state chiefs in politically crucial regions, India Today reported.
Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP President J P Nadda held key deliberations on Tuesday (15 April) to deliberate on the appointment of new state unit chiefs for Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, and Odisha.
The party has so far appointed 14 state presidents. However, as per the party's constitution, elections in at least 19 states are mandatory before the national presidential election can be conducted.
The internal polls are crucial since BJP’s constitution prohibits a national president from being appointed solely through nomination.
The names of the remaining key states are likely to be finalised soon, according to the sources cited in the India Today report.
Following this, the party's national election officer is expected to announce the timeline for the party’s presidential election.
The presidential election is likely to be held either later this month or in early May, India Today reported citing party insiders.
This comes amid unrelated changes to the Prime Minister's schedule, as a planned visit to Jammu was postponed due to weather concerns.
Further, a recent meeting between the Prime Minister and the President was termed routine protocol post the PM’s return from an overseas visit.
