The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is set to announce the names of its first list of candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections next week.

The party will reportedly release the list with names of 100 candidates for the Lok Sabha polls on Thursday (29 February).

The candidates list will be released ahead of the announcement of the Lok Sabha polls by the Election Commission next month.

The list is likely to include key BJP figures including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah.

The Central Election Committee of the BJP is likely to meet on Thursday, NDTV reported citing sources.

The announcement of the first list of BJP candidates for the Lok Sabha polls may be made after the meeting.

The first list will be crucial because the BJP has set itself a target of winning 370 of 543 seats and is working towards securing 400 seats for the NDA.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi represents the Varanasi Parliamentary constituency in the Lok Sabha, having secured victory in this seat twice.

In the 2014 elections, he won by a substantial margin of 3.37 lakh votes, a figure that rose to 4.8 lakh votes in the 2019 elections.

Home Minister Amit Shah had contested and won the 2019 election from Gandhinagar, a seat previously held by BJP stalwart L K Advani.
