Over a year after opening the first phase of the Mumbai Coastal Road from Marine Drive to Worli, the BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has yet to determine how key reclaimed land parcels will be utilised, The Indian Express reported .

The project reclaimed 110 hectares of land, with 40 hectares used for road construction and the remaining 70 earmarked for open spaces, including utilities like parking areas and walkways.

In response to an RTI query by Breach Candy resident Nigum Lakhani, the BMC said no decision has been made on the placement of public utilities within the 70 hectares.

It added that no maps or layouts have yet been prepared to guide the land’s usage.

The reply came from the Coastal Road's chief engineer’s office, IE reported.

In May, the BMC appointed Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) to develop and maintain the 70 hectares at its own cost.

According to the RTI reply, the land has been leased to RIL for 30 years, with an option to extend for another 30 years.

An official said the 7-km promenade will soon be opened to the public, offering additional open space by the sea.

Development of the rest of the plots will follow.

The RTI reply also noted that the BMC has not yet recorded public suggestions or objections regarding the land’s use.

Work on the 10-km Mumbai Coastal Road began in 2018, with phased openings starting in March 2024. The road was operational first, with civic authorities stating that development of green spaces would take an additional year.
