Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Saturday (9 August) launched the state’s first anti-drone system, ‘Baaz Akh’, to curb cross-border smuggling of weapons and drugs from Pakistan, reported Hindustan Times.

At an event in the border district of Tarn Taran, Mann, joined by AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal, unveiled three such systems.

The Chief Minister announced that Punjab will be the first state in India to deploy its own anti-drone system in coordination with the Border Security Force as a second line of defence in border districts.

“Whenever any drone activity is spotted, this system will intercept it and neutralise it,” Mann stated.

Punjab shares a 553-kilometre border with Pakistan, spanning Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Pathankot, Fazilka, Ferozepur, and Gurdaspur.

Mann called the launch a “big step” in stopping drug and arms smuggling.

“In the coming days, we will expand the anti-drone system in the state,” he added.

Reaffirming his government’s anti-drug commitment under Yudh Nasheyan Virudh, Mann said the initiative would significantly strengthen law enforcement.

Kejriwal emphasised the AAP government’s determination to fight the drug menace, criticising previous administrations.

“We know that most drugs come from Pakistan through drones. Today, the Punjab government is implementing the anti-drone system. If any drone enters Punjab from Pakistan, then this system will neutralise it,” he said.

The state has so far launched three systems, with plans to deploy six more and purchase additional units if required.

Kejriwal expressed confidence in Punjab Police’s strict action against smugglers, including demolishing their properties.
