As the Sela tunnel in Arunachal Pradesh's Tawang sector is set to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi soon, here are three Border Roads Organisation (BRO) projects in the Ladakh sector that become focus now:
1. Alternative connectivity to Daulat Beg Oldi: Situated in eastern Ladakh, DBO is India’s northernmost military base and very close to the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China.
The existing road between Darbuk-Shyok and DBO runs close to the LAC. An alternative route will provide better connectivity. Its construction is in the advanced stage and is expected to be completed soon.
According to a BRO official, key sections of the Sasoma-Saser La-Saser Brangsa-Gapshan-DBO road were completed last year.
2. Third connectivity to Leh: After the Srinagar-Zojila-Kargil-Leh road and Manali-Leh road, Nimu–Padum-Darcha road is set to be the third all-weather road to Leh.
Work on this road is in an advanced stage and is expected to be completed by March 2024, a BRO spokesperson told Hindustan Times.
3. Nyoma airstrip upgradation: This is another project in the Ladakh sector and with the upgrade, Nyoma will become a full-fledged base for fighter operations.
The foundation for this project was laid by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in September 2023 and it is expected to be completed by September 2025.
